The Highly Skilled Migrant
Programme (HSMP) visa has been a very popular visa for highly skilled people
wanting to live and work freely within the UK without being ‘sponsored’ by a
UK employer. It was replaced in November 2008 with the Tier 1 visa, which is
very similar. The Tier 1
visa is designed for people who meet the requirements of a points system
based on a combination of age, academic qualifications, recent earnings
(previous 12 months), UK experience, English language ability, and
maintenance funds. Note that the
minimum academic qualification requirement for a first-time Tier 1 visa
application is a Masters degree (UK equivalent). If you
currently hold an HSMP visa then you can extend the visa under Tier 1 using
your original qualification, such as a Bachelor degree. To find
